Achilles Tendonitis

Tendonitis is defined as an inflammation process of a tendon. It is common in athletes who overuse a particular joint. Achilles tendonitis, which is inflammation of the Achilles tendon just above its insertion on the calcaneus (heel bone). Pain is usually characterized as achy pain worse after sporting activity, running or cycling. The diagnosis of Achilles tendonitis can be made with physical examination by a physician and sometimes confirmed with an MRI

Recommendations:
  • Consult a physician if you think you have Achilles Tendonitis
  • Warm up and stretch before, during, and after an activity, for muscle and tendon flexibility
  • Rest is the most important part of the treatment program for Achilles Tendonitis. Decrease training program by 50 percent. If that does not cure the problem, training should be decreased again by 50 percent.
  • Develop a Cross-training program
  • Use Ankle Braces and Supports to help treat and prevent Achilles Tendonitis
  • Use Foot Orthotics to help correct foot problems which may be contributing to Achilles Tendonitis
