Plantar Fasciitis (Heel Pain Syndrome)

The plantar fascia is a tough, thick fibrous band which forms the arch of the foot that runs from the heel to the ball of the foot - it is one of crucial structures that helps hold up the arch. When the plantar fascia becomes inflamed or torn from repetitive stress or a traumatic injury, it can result in a painful condition called, plantar faciitis or heel pain syndrome. The majority of cases occur when the medial portion (inside) of the plantar fascia pulls at the junction of the heel bone and fails to heal properly. Symptoms are characterized by pain when getting out of bed in the morning directly on the bottom of the heel. The diagnosis of Plantar Fasciitis can be made with physical examination by a physician and sometimes confirmed with an MRI.

Recommendations:
  • Consult a physician if you think you have Plantar Fasciitis
  • Reduction of inflammation should begin as soon as possible. The RICE regimen (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) should be followed.
  • Proper shoe wear is the most important part of the treatment program for Plantar Fasciitis
  • Vigorous ankle strengthening program and cross-training to build endurance and prevent injuries due to fatigue
  • Night Splinting, a plastic splint that holds the foot at a right angle to the ankle during sleep, can often be helpful
  • Use Shoe Insets, Heel Cups and Foot Orthotics to help correct foot problems which may be contributing to Plantar Fasciitis.
