Turf Toe

Turf toe causes pain that occurs in the joint of the Big toe. It is usually an inflammation process that occurs when the toe is jammed forcibly into the ground (grass or more commonly artificial turf). It can also occur when the toe is bent backward too far. Turf toe causes pain in the big toe when it is used to run, plant, and/or push off. Improper footwear makes athletes more susceptible to turf toe. Symptoms are characterized by acute pain and swelling at the base of the big toe. The joint can then become stiffer and can become arthritic with time which ultimately decreases motion and mobility. The diagnosis of Turf toe can be made with physical examination by a physician and sometimes confirmed with an XR

Recommendations:
  • Consult a physician if you think you have Turf toe
  • Reduction of inflammation should begin as soon as possible. The RICE regimen (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) should be followed.
  • Proper shoe wear is the most important part of the treatment program for Turf Toe
  • Develop a Cross-training program
  • Use Shoe Inserts and Foot Orthotics to help correct foot problems which may be contributing to Turf Toe
