Back Spasms
An injury to a spinal ligament or joint can cause back spasms which is an uncontrollable muscle contraction of the back in response. Back spasms usually are the result of a sudden or extended trauma upon the spine or the muscles supporting the spine. Symptoms characteristic of a back spasm is severe back pain without leg symptoms. Spasms affect the musculature on either side of spine. The diagnosis of a back spasm can be made by physical examination by a physician and confirmed with an MRI.

- Consult a physician if you think you have a back spasm.
- Acute treatment starts with reduction of inflammation - RICE regimen (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) with a short period of bed rest
- Prevention involves strength and conditioning emphasizing core strengthening
- Back rehabilitation program that involves core stabilization and trunk stabilization can be useful for injury prevention as well as exercising proper back mechanics
