Ulnar Collateral Ligament Tears Of The Elbow – Inner Elbow Ligament Injury

The ulnar or medial collateral ligament (UCL) is located on the inside of the elbow. Its function is to provide stability to the inside of the elbow during activity, such as throwing. At times due to the excessive forces across the elbow with pitching and throwing, the ligament can stretch out and become loose. Additionally, a significant trauma to the elbow may cause injury to the UCL. Tommy John, a major league pitcher suffered from this injury and ultimately fully recovered to resume his career. Symptoms of UCL injury are characterized by pain over the inner elbow, especially after throwing. Occasionally the athlete was experience catching or locking. The elbow may feel warm and can be tender to touch. The diagnosis of UCL injury can be made by physical examination by a physician and reliably confirmed with an MRI.

Recommendations:
  • Consult a physician if you think you have a ulnar collateral ligament injury
  • Acute treatment starts with reduction of inflammation - RICE regimen (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation).
  • Rest, avoidance of overuse and decreasing the amount of throwing is fundamental in the treatment of a ulnar collateral ligament injury
  • Stretch before, during, and after an activity, to allow for more joint mobility.
  • Core stabilization and proper throwing mechanics are crucial to injury avoidance
  • Use Elbow supports and Elbow Braces
