The inner and outer knee joint ligaments are called the collateral ligaments collateral ligaments. The medial collateral ligament (MCL) connects the femur (thighbone) to the tibia (shinbone) and provides inner knee stability. The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) connects the femur to the fibula (smaller outer bone of the leg) and provides outer knee stability. Injuries to the MCL and LCL are usually caused by contact on the outside or inside of the knee, respectively. The diagnosis of a collateral ligament injuries can be made with a physical examination by a physician and confirmed with an MRI.
