Rotator Cuff/Shoulder Strain

A rotator cuff strain occurs from either a specific injury to the shoulder or a repetitive overuse injury. Individuals who are involved with repetitive overhead activities are at risk. A rotator cuff strain usually causes pain, weakness and limits overhead movement. The pain is usually due to inflammation of the rotator cuff causing a "tendonitis" of the rotator cuff itself. Symptoms characteristic of a rotator cuff strain include aching pain that radiates down the outside of the shoulder worsened with overhead activities. The diagnosis of rotator cuff strain can be made with physical examination by a physician and usually confirmed with an MRI

Recommendations:
  • Consult a physician if you think you have a rotator cuff strain.
  • Acute treatment starts with reduction of inflammation - RICE regimen (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).
  • Rest and avoidance of overhead activities is fundamental in the treatment of a rotator cuff strain.
  • A rotator cuff strengthening program can reduce the chances of developing a rotator cuff strain.
  • Immobilization of the shoulder may initially take place in an Arm Sling and/or Shoulder Immobilizer followed by stretching program.
