MEDIAL COLLATERAL LIGAMENT (MCL) INJURY – INNER KNEE LIGAMENTOUS INJURY

The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is one of the four main ligaments in the knee and is the primary stabilizer for side to side stability. The most common sports in which MCL injuries occur is soccer, football and skiing. Injury to the MCL usually results from results from a contact injury such as being clipped from the outside of the knee as the inner knees gives way and “pops”. The diagnosis of an MCL injury can be made by physical examination by a physician and confirmed with an MRI.

Recommendations:
  • Consult a physician if you think you injured your MCL
  • Stretch before, during, and after an activity, for muscle and tendon flexibility
  • Vigorous leg strengthening program and cross-training to build endurance and prevent injuries due to fatigue
  • MCL Braces
